Splat! Bold Hair Dye Review
The product I purchased was Splat: Rebellious Colors in the color “Pure Sapphire” and started out the process with dyed black hair, that has been dyed a few times in a row. So, really set in dye to begin with.
If I had just this box, which I purchased from Walmart for ~ $9.18, I would not have had this good of results. If you are starting from dyed black hair I suggest professional bleach, or a professional toner to get rid of the orange. I actually had an additional packet of Lightening Bleach and bottle of Splat Oxide from when my sister touched up her hair color a few months back.
On Day 1, I bleached my hair for the first time, leaving the dye on for about an hour. The majority of my hair lightened to a medium-dark copper. The roots of my hair, which I put bleach on last (to no avail) still came out lighter than the rest of it. I washed the bleach out with just water. My hair felt very much like straw...or the frayed end of a shoelace, not too pleasant.
On Day 2, I applied the bleaching mixture for a second time and again, let it develop for about an hour. This time I rolled my hair up into a bun at the back of my head, hoping the heat would help it develop more.
Success-ish. My hair was very light copper and blonde. The lighter parts from the first bleaching were now nearly white, so those were definitely going to turn out blue.
When I rinsed the bleach this time, I conditioned with Pantene Pro-V’s Repair & Protect conditioner, which made it feel 100x better. Super soft and smelling great.
Unfortunately, I had to venture out into public with my hair in this in-between state, to the place where I work no less, eeks!
I finally got out the color, running on very little sleep and fearing disaster.
I covered what I could on my hair, then had someone come in behind me with an extra set of latex gloves and reach what I couldn’t. And that, I believe, is when there was more dye on my skin than on my hair. The color developed for about 30 minutes and I rinsed using the same conditioner, then blow dried. I wish that I hadn’t gotten more pictures, but having my phone around all this bleach and dye would not have went well for me.
Because my hair did not bleach white and...does anyone’s ever, really? My hair was more green than blue. Which I have no problem with. When I first started using Splat, about 6 years ago, green hair had even more of a stigma than the other colors I was dying, for some crazy reason.
So most of it turned green, the roots and some sections did turn the nice “Pure Sapphire” Overall, I am satisfied with my experience. Eventually, I would like to try their “Deep Emerald” shade, just to see if it turns out the same.
The downsides:
As I mentioned, I ended up wearing a LOT of the very concentrated dye on my skin. I mean, you can Vaseline, but that doesn’t help when it looks like a smurf exploded in your bathroom. Towels, put towels everywhere.
For getting it on skin, I’ve heard a couple different attempts, but the only thing that was successful for me (on my face anyway) was Neutrogena/Equate Makeup Remover Wipes in the little blue & white bag.
At the time of writing this (Saturday) it’s been 3 days since I dyed my hair, I don’t see a dramatic fade in the color, but my neck is still stained aqua.
So, give Splat a try if you’re looking for a change! :)
